As seen in images posted by the Instagram account @lahikes on May 29, hikers discovered the herd of shy and elusive creatures nestled in the forest north of Los Angeles.

But as she approached her last two miles on the Gridley Trail in Los Padres National Forest she found herself face-to-face with an unexpected visitor: a mountain lion.
