The footage, which was captured by a group of divers on Feb. 1, was obtained by Lionfish University, a non-profit organization hoping to raise awareness about the lionfish invasion of the Caribbean.

While catching a lionfish is relatively easy, it can be difficult — and dangerous — to remove the fish from the spear tip of an ELF and tow the animal without being injured by its venomous spines.

This is the first lionfish found near the shoreline in Alabama. It was speared Saturday afternoon in about 14 feet of water. A jab from the venomous spines can send a person to the hospital.

The volume of lionfish used in the U.S. totals hundreds, not thousands of pounds, and it’s expensive -- about $16 a pound compared with snapper, which is going for about $8.45.
