Lady Liberty appears "in a new light, as an African-American woman" in a $100 gold coin unveiled on Thursday, officials with the U.S. Mint have announced.

The 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin shows the woman’s head in profile with a crown of stars. It features the year of the mint’s founding, 1792, as well as 2017.

The coin was designed by artist Justin Kunz. Previous images of Lady Liberty were always depicted as a White woman. The coin is 24-karat gold and is set for release in April of 2017.

She’s also, for the first time on an officially minted coin, portrayed as a black woman. The United States Mint unveiled the 24-karat gold coin in commemoration of its 225th anniversary.
