Kara Kennedy, a graduate of Tufts University, was the oldest of three children. She was born in 1960 as her father campaigned for his brother, John F. Kennedy, during the presidential primaries.

Kara Kennedy died Friday after a workout at a Washington health club. The 51-year-old was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002 but underwent successful surgery and treatment.

Kennedy also spoke of the closeness Kara shared with her father (and Joan’s ex-husband), Sen. Ted Kennedy, before his death from brain cancer in 2009.
