UNESCO and Educational International created World teachers' Day in 1994, to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

World Teachers' Day is Oct. 5. It is meant to celebrate hardworking and often anonymous educators and offer a chance to reflect on the support teachers need to operate at their best.

The President made the pledge during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day with the theme “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” in Abuja on Saturday.
