“I was inspired to work on Indonesian batik fabric during my travels to Jakarta. However, it is a challenge to work on the Indonesian batik as it is both beautiful as well as complex.

And so the machine-made Indonesian-inspired patterned fabrics became indelibly associated with Africa—and with a particular notion of African tribalness, of which Western fashion cannot get enough.

The latest adaptation of batik by different ethnic groups is therefore part of a long tradition. If the process is a bit self-conscious, that is typical of modern Indonesian nationalism.

In 2008, Respati founded PURANA, a fashion house focusing on Indonesian batik and traditional textiles. In 2015, she launched a ready-to-wear line called PURANArtw to reach a wider audience.
