The Japanese on Guam were shaken by the loss of Saipan on July 9 and the Imperial Japanese Navy’s loss in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 19-20. So was the leadership of Japan.

In the morning of Dec. 8, 1941, while many CHamorus were still in churches celebrating Guam’s patron saint, Santa Marian Kamalen, the Japanese started bombing Guam.
