A hit-and-run driver killed a highway worker in a construction zone on I-75 South near mile marker 109 in Georgia. Police are investigating the incident.

Benjamin Alstoft, 40, was being chased by Cobb County police in a Land Rover in the northbound lanes at about 3 a.m. when the officer performed a PIT maneuver, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - I-75 was shut down in both directions in Bartow County near Cartersville on Thursday morning as law enforcement investigated a severe crash.

Investigators initially closed I-75 in both directions, but reopened the northbound side around 5:07 a.m. The southbound lanes reopened just before 6:30 a.m.

Once the barriers are in place, three lanes of southbound traffic will be shifted to the right side of I-75 south. This traffic pattern is expected to stay in effect until fall 2026.

Starting Friday night, July 11, crews will shift traffic on I-75 SB to the right side of the highway. After the shift, a northbound lane will move over to the southbound side in a contraflow pattern.
