Herrington Country Park, which is close to Penshaw Monument, was built on the site of a former colliery. At around 320 acres it is one of Britain's biggest parks.
The site at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland is where a colliery once stood. The pit opened in 1874 and by the time it closed in 1985, more than 100 workers had lost their lives.
