The mask-wearing emoji used to represent being sick, what some might consider a neutral-to-sad feeling. In the next release of Apple’s iOS, this emoji will be getting a mood change, so to speak.

The new mask emoji is essentially the smiling face with a mask on. While it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is smiling, the emoji doesn’t look quite as cheerless as it does now.

The “face with tears of joy” is reportedly the most popular emoji since 2017. In 2021, it accounted for over 5% of emoticons sent online.

The Happy Face Museum in Dartmouth, N.S., closed after the owner, Debbie Power, died this fall. Now, her daughter is hoping to find a home for all the smiling faces.
