Miami’s Freedom Tower receives $5 million from the Knight Foundation for restoration, reopening, and cultural programming ahead of its 100th anniversary.

The 289‑foot tower, often called the “Ellis Island of the South,” was completed in 1925 as the headquarters of The Miami News, serving as a landmark of Miami’s early 20th‑century growth.

Scheduled to be completed in May, the Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Blvd. on Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, will become a museum highlighting the building’s full history dating back to 1925.
