In a 22-13 vote April 21, the WIAA Representative Assembly officially sanctioned girls flag football as a WIAA recognized sport by a single vote, the first since 1999.

It now has 360 schools and almost 10,000 participants. According to the NFHS, the number of girls flag football participants more than doubled to nearly 43,000 nationwide from 2022-23 to 2023-24.

“They have put together the NFL Flag Football League. There are 700,000 kids and young adults playing flag football all over the country, and almost 500,000 of them are women,” she said.
