Extra Space Storage on Thursday completed the largest business acquisition ever by a Utah company, merging with its rival, New York-based Life Storage, in an $12-billion transaction.

Extra Space Storage's acquisition of Amherst-based Life Storage is about to become a reality. Shareholders of the two self-storage companies approved the deal, in separate votes conducted on Tuesday.
