Hurricane Erick has strengthened into a powerful Category 3 storm and is closing in on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, the US National Hurricane Center said on Wednesday.

He was a “gym junkie,” who liked to hike and golf. A former football player, he had plans to go back and help coach at the Mesa high school where he graduated.
