Around 11:40 p.m., Duke Health officials said a 12-inch chilled water pipe inside a wall burst at Duke University Hospital and caused flooding in several areas including the emergency department.

Duke University Hospital is Durham’s Level I trauma center. Similar facilities in Raleigh and Chapel Hill are taking patients after Duke’s emergency department flooded on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.

About 80% of patients transported by ambulance in Durham typically go to Duke University Hospital, around 120 to 140 people every 24 hours, Smith estimated.
