Scientists Say They've Revived the Long-Extinct Dire Wolf - MSNThe Colossal team claims to have used a 72,000-year-old dire wolf skull and a 13,000-year-old tooth to isolate real dire wolf genome sequences, then map some of that genome onto gray wolf DNA.
The de-extinction process begins with ancient DNA. In the case of the dire wolf project, Colossal scientists were working from two fossils, a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull.
Colossal says its dire wolf work had key differences. Scientists first analyzed the genome of the dire wolves contained in the ancient tooth and skull.
“So what Colossal has produced is a grey wolf, but it has some dire wolf-like characteristics, like a larger skull and white fur,” Dr. Nic Rawlence said. “It’s a hybrid.” ...
