On 1,000 of its street light poles across the five boroughs, there are now banners hanging with traffic safety messages.

The Department of Transportation, or DOT, sent a letter to New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority on March 18 warning that it must address safety on its system or risk losing federal funding.
