Columbus police shot and killed Jerry D. Smith, 37, during a SWAT standoff on May 19. Police were responding to a domestic violence call where Smith was reportedly holding a woman hostage.

A statue of Christopher Columbus sat in front of Columbus City Hall for 65 years, after being donated by Genoa, our Italian sister city. On July 1, 2020, the statue was removed.
