The Forest Service’s program is smaller, with 17 so-called territories, mostly in central Nevada, where only about 2,500 wild horses and burros currently reside, according to the agency’s counts.

The wild horses were being captured during a federal roundup in northern Nevada led by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Nevada has the largest population of wild horses.

“Nevada is home to more than 30,000 wild horses and burros – more than half of all the wild horses and burros in the United States,” said Congresswoman Dina Titus.

Nevada has the largest population of wild horses. The BLM began the East Pershing Wild Horse Gather on Dec. 28, according to its website.

Today Nevada hosts more than 33,000 wild horses, or 57% of BLM horses in the 10 western states. Wild horse populations can double every four years if not managed.
