The Borrelia burgdorferi live in the mid-gut of the tick during the winter months. With a blood meal in the late spring or summer, the bacteria proliferate and move to the tick’s salivary glands.
Studies by the American Lyme Disease Foundation and Yale researchers have found Borrelia burgdorferi in dead animals from 1870 to 1919, which were preserved in museum collections.
"We know many other vector-borne pathogens, like Borrelia burgdorferi and the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium, rely on cholesterol and other lipids from their hosts," Shaw said.
While Morgellons disease has sometimes been considered a delusional syndrome, this microscopic and molecular study suggests that it is an infectious illness associated with Borrelia spirochetes.
Ideally, if a Borrelia burgdorferi -carrying tick latches on to the skin, the vaccinated immune system will recognize the bacteria and attack and clear it, preventing Lyme disease, Langley said.
Along with Borrelia burgdorferi, black-legged ticks can carry the rare but serious Babesiosis and Powassan viruses.
The unusual molecular makeup of Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease, may hold clues for understanding and treating the tick-borne disease.
