Highway 1 may still be closed at the Esalen Institue, but Bay Area visitors to Big Sur are in luck: Most of the area’s parks and hiking trails are north of the closure and waiting for you this summer.

BIG SUR – A full overnight closure of Highway 1 will take place this weekend as Caltrans continues its repair efforts to a seawall near Rocky Creek bridge about 12 miles south of Carmel.

Caltrans said it will continue its efforts to fully restore public access to Highway 1 in the Big Sur area. Crews resumed full-scale excavation activities at the Regent’s Slide area in mid-July.
