Barney debuted in 1988 in the series “Barney & Friends” which aired for 14 seasons across multiple networks globally, including on PBS in the U.S. The series concluded Nov. 2, 2010.

From 1996 to 1998, Barney ranked as Billboard’s top children’s artist. In 2002, HIT Entertainment bought Barney’s producing company, Lyrick Studios, for $275 million.

Barney, the big purple dinosaur with a preschool following, will be returning to TV in 2024 with a new animated series, according to Mattel. A new film, toys and adult apparel are also in the works.

Barney is coming back. Mattel Inc. said Monday it is relaunching Barney, the purple dinosaur who was a staple of children’s television in the 1990s and early 2000s, as an animated character.

While a yassified version of Barney was not on anyone’s 2023 Bingo cards, it was almost inevitable. Mattel is ready to revive its most beloved IP, beginning with the upcoming Barbie movie.
