CORNUCOPIA, Wis. (AP) — The National Park Service says it's still too dangerous to explore the Apostle Islands ice caves off the Wisconsin shore of Lake Superior.
About 65% of Lake Superior is covered in ice this week. In 2014, when the caves were accessible for weeks and in 2015 when the window narrowed to nine days, the lake was mostly covered.
Tours of the caves are offered on most Saturdays May through September. Remaining tours this year include Carolyn’s Caverns Walking Tour at 1 p.m. Aug. 6, 20 and 27 and 10 a.m. Aug. 13.
