While Michigan often sees a day or two of warm weather early in the season, the weather service said March 2012 brought an historic heat wave. On March 27 that year it was 87 degrees in Alpena.

Among its historic attractions are Mackinac Island State Park, which covers 80% of the island. It contains the oldest building in Michigan, as well as 13 other buildings from the 1700s.
