Meredith Tabbone: Holy moly. Narrator: Over 20 towns across Italy have started selling abandoned homes for a single euro, or about $1.10. For the sake of this video, we'll call them dollar homes.

That’s why authorities should place them up for sale. Italy is dotted with more than 6,000 abandoned hamlets and villages, while another 15,000 have lost more than 95 percent of their residents.

Around 900 abandoned houses will be offered for sale. Most are located in the oldest parts of the town. Around half are ruined, and will be given away at a symbolic price of €1.
