Preseason polls are not supposed to have a bearing on how the College Football Playoff Selection Committee ranks teams later in the season. Still, the Big 12 is taking extra care to make sure the CFP doesn't have additional ammunition to use against the conference later this season.
Kansas State coach Chris Klieman wants to take the no preseason polls a step further when it comes to the College Football Playoff. Basically, the Wildcats leader doesn’t want polls of any kind until the first playoff rankings are released.
Put another way: Had Utah, which was picked to win the Big 12 last summer and slotted No. 12 in the AP preseason poll, produced exactly the same set of results as ASU throughout the fall, the Utes assuredly would have received better treatment by the pollsters in November. And by the committee, as well.
The transfer portal and constant turnover makes assembling spot-on preseason rankings a tough task. CFP rankings are all that ultimately matter anyhow.
