Democratic Party of South Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung rode a wave of resentment toward ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol of the People Power Party.

South Korea’s center-left Lee Jae-myung was declared president Wednesday after winning a snap election, taking the helm of a nation deeply divided after his predecessor’s disastrous attempt to declare martial law.

After half a year of political turmoil, uncertainty and division, South Korea is voting for a new president to succeed Yoon Suk Yeol, the disgraced former leader who plunged the democratic nation into chaos by declaring martial law in December.
