U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz urged Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows to resist moves to water down “school choice” proposals.

Ted Cruz and Elon Musk are joining a growing number of people in Washington with eyes on the Texas lawmakers as school choice moves through the Texas House.

House Speaker Dustin Burrows reappointed state Rep. Brad Buckley (R-Killeen) to lead the committee. Buckley tried to get school voucher legislation approved in 2023 but rural Republicans and Democrats blocked the effort.

The Texas Senate passed a school voucher bill that would offer $10,000 to students for private school tuition.

"The Texas Senate's passage of SB 2 is the biggest launch of any universal school choice program in American history, with $1 billion in funding for 100,000 students," Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said in a statement Wednesday night.

School choice' legislation appears to have momentum in the Texas House after newly elected Speaker Dustin Burrows showed support for the policy.
