Staten Island Chuck says Punxsutawney Phil is full of it. New York’s City’s resident groundhog didn’t see his shadow on Sunday, meaning a swift end to winter despite his more famous prognosticating counterpart from Pennsylvania’s predicting another six weeks earlier in the day.

Staten Island Chuck, a groundhog at the Staten Island Zoo, did not see his shadow Sunday and predicted an early spring for 2025. Chuck's forecast contradicts Punxsutawney Phil, who predicted six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow about an hour earlier at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania.

Punxsutawney Phil may be the best-known weather-predicting groundhog, but a new list is throwing shade on how much his predictions should be trusted — while New York City’s rodent prognosticator is tops in the country.

Groundhog Day on Staten Island was once again a massive success, as Staten Island Chuck was greeted by over 150 fans.

The Germans eventually began to believe that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day, a hedgehog would cast a shadow — predicting six more weeks of harsh winter weather. And it was the Germans who brought this belief to the United States.
