The weather at Bethpage Black on Thursday is still forecast to bring plenty of rain but the front that threatened to washout the day’s play has shifted to the north.
Competition at the 2025 Ryder Cup begins Friday at Bethpage but a day ahead of that, fans should expect some rain to fall at Bethpage.
There is precedent for preferred lies at the Ryder Cup, however. The rule was invoked for the 2010 matches in Wales, which were soaked the entire week, leading to an infamous situation with leaky U.S. rain suits and play ultimately finished on Monday.
The setup for this week's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black looks more like a regular tour event than one of the majors that have been played here in years past.
Bethpage Black is, dare we say, almost defenseless on Day 1 of the Ryder Cup. The sign that normally hangs from the railing behind No. 1 tee should be changed from its mention of “extremely difficult course” to instead offer a hearty welcome and maybe a coupon for players to receive a free beer in the clubhouse.
Bethpage Black was under a weather warning early Sept. 25, receiving about an inch of rain by 9 a.m., including several heavy downpours.
Europe has controlled the modern rivalry, but the tournament is back on American soil. The U.S. has won its last two Ryder Cups as the host.
A statement on the Ryder Cup website read: "Due to the forecast of inclement weather on Thursday, September 25, the Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony has been moved to Wednesday, September 24. The Opening Ceremony pre-show will begin at 3 p.m. with the Opening Ceremony set for 4 p.m.
