On Sunday afternoon on Long Island, the Washington Capitals star broke Wayne Gretzky’s record to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer with 895. It was a record that once felt out of reach, like most of Gretzky’s career marks.

Alex Ovechkin has broken Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals in NHL history by scoring the 895th of his career.

When Ovechkin broke the record in the second period, the game stopped. Officials rolled out a carpet onto the ice, and Ovechkin’s family along with NHL officials and Ted Leonsis, the owner of the Capitals came to the center of the rink.
