Brooklyn Park voters will vote to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed last month in a politically motivated assassination.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has called a special election to fill the seat formerly held by Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, who authorities say was assassinated at her Twin Cities home​ in June.

Candidates have until July 22 to file for office in the special election for House District 34B in the Brooklyn Park area.

The special election to fill the seat vacated by the assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman will happen in September.

Brooklyn Park councilmember Christian Eriksen announced Tuesday he is running for the House seat previously held by Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.

Hortman represented House District 34B, a district that includes Brooklyn Park, as well as parts of Champlin and Coon Rapids.

Candidates can begin filing paperwork through July 22 to run for the Minnesota House District 34B seat, previously held by the late Rep. Melissa Hortman. The special election is set for September 16.
