Democrat Mary Sheffield, Detroit’s City Council president, won the city’s mayoral primary in a landslide Tuesday night. She was the top vote-getter of nine candidates and will advance to the November general election against the second-place winner.

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and the Rev. Solomon Kinloch are headed to the general election in the race for Detroit mayor.

Voters will decide in November which of the two will succeed popular three-term Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running as an independent for Michigan’s open governor’s seat in 2026.
