Firefighters battled a brush fire in Bonsall in North San Diego County, near SR-76 and South Mission Road, on Monday, sending large plumes of smoke into the air that can be seen from miles away.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 3 p.m. off La Canada Road and state Route 76, west of Interstate 15 in Bonsall, according to Cal Fire.
With the Lilac Fire burning just yards away, rescue workers risked their own safety to free as many horses as possible at the elite thoroughbred training center, which has more than 450 horses.
The fire was reported as 50% contained by evening. Evacuation orders were put in place for homes east of South Mission Road, south of Via Monserate and west of SR-76, according to online fire mapping.
