Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba went into his first summit meeting with US President Donald Trump amid concerns in Tokyo that Japan could be next in the firing line of US allies after Canada and others.

Ishiba will also look to remind Trump — who has proposed tariffs on both friends and foes in an effort to boost American manufacturing — about the long-running U.S.-Japan alliance. Japanese companies employ nearly 1 million Americans and have held the top spot for cumulative foreign direct investment into the U.S. over the last five years.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will go to the White House to try to rekindle Japan’s relationship with President Donald Trump — and to fend off potential tariffs.
