The Supreme Court has temporarily kept on the job the head of the federal agency that protects government whistleblowers.

It took less than a month for a case from Donald Trump’s second presidential term to reach the Supreme Court. The administration’s appeal stems from Trump’s attempt to fire a top government watchdog in a dispute that implicates longstanding precedent that protects independent federal agencies.

The Trump administration fired Hampton Dellinger, head of the Office of Special Counsel, who sued to overturn the decision.
