An Air India passenger plane bound for London with 244 people onboard crashed Thursday in India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad, the airline and local media reported.

A plume of thick black smoke was seen at the crash of Flight AI171, which was destined for London Gatwick Airport.

An early focus of the probe includes a possible loss or reduction of thrust.
