The so-called 'years of austerity' under David Cameron and George Osborne saw numbers fall once more – only to bounce back to almost 520,000 again under subsequent Tory prime ministers.

However, Labour MPs have warned the proposals will 'destroy lives' and are 'impossible to support'. Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy said the scale of the cuts 'would have made George Osborne blush'.
