Toyota’s data shows it could sell 100,000 to 150,000 compact trucks a year in the U.S. alone to address the appetite for a more affordable entry-level truck.

According to a report from Automotive News, Toyota is working on plans for a line of back-to-the-basics compact pickup trucks to slot below the bestselling Toyota Tacoma.

While Toyota seems to be all in on the idea, it’s not just about market timing. It appears as though Toyota is already well into working on a small truck for the Brazilian market.

Toyota just recalled models of its only full-size truck, the Toyota Tundra. The Tundra is its largest truck and the Tundra Hybrid is its most expensive pickup, starting at $58,005.

Toyota is looking at expanding its truck portfolio here in the United States to include a smaller rival for the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, a company executive has admitted.
