According to the NWS tsunami warning system, the earthquake occurred off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, around 7:24 p.m. ET.

A tsunami advisory is in effect for Washington’s outer coast, the Columbia River estuary coast and the Juan de Fuca Strait coast, along with much of the West Coast of the U.S., following an 8.7 magnitude earthquake near Russia.

The year’s strongest earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings and advisories in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington.
