The number of unemployed is now at the highest level since 2021, when the U.S. was still recovering millions of jobs lost at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, long-term unemployed workers make up 22.1 percent of the total unemployed population, up from 20.6 percent in March 2024, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report.
