An EF2 tornado struck Henry County without advance warning, causing significant damage to 13 structures and injuring residents, including a critically injured 18-year-old.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 12 a.m. Saturday for Montgomery County and surrounding areas. “Scattered severe storms with wind damage, large hail, and a few tornadoes will be possible this afternoon and evening across much of the Mid Atlantic,” the weather service said.

Raleigh is under a severe thunderstorm warning with potential large hail, damaging winds, and a chance of tornadoes this afternoon into evening.

The strongest storms have moved into areas south of Interstate 20, including Butts, Jasper, and Monroe counties, with heavy rain tracking toward Monticello and Forsyth. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has now been canceled for several counties as conditions stabilize in northern and central Georgia.
