A driverless train on the newly-opened Sydney Metro northwest line has broken down between Cherrybrook and Epping, leaving commuters stranded and services delayed along the line.

The Sydney Metro Northwest line, which opened on Sunday to the delight of tens of thousands of people, has faced its first peak-hour test on Monday morning.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma has announced a $12.5 billion Government-funded metro rail line for growth areas in north-west Sydney.

Sydney's new $7.3 billion northwest Metro is expected to open later this month, according to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
