The house is the birthplace of John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author and Salinas native. The house was opened as a restaurant on Feb. 27, 1974 — which was Steinbeck’s 72nd birthday.
Earnest said the earliest the Valley Guild could realistically reopen the Steinbeck House would be next year. The nonprofit is raising money online at bit.ly/33eE4sK in hopes of making that a reality.
Soon the lights at the Steinbeck House Restaurant, a mainstay of the Salinas community, will go out. The historical building is the birthplace and childhood home of the famous author.
