A man who claimed that he saw religious visions and predicted that the rapture would take place this week is a South African pastor whose theory has been shared widely on social media.

The Christian Bible is vague in its prophetic details and the doctrine is relatively recent, having only come into common usage in the 1830s, according to the now-defunct AmericanCatholic.org.
