A Long Island school district may get to keep a shortened version of its “Thunderbirds” team name that New York State seemed poised to shoot down under its Native American logo ban.

High-profile tribal activists backed a Long Island school in its fight to keep its team name despite a state ban on Native American logos – joining a President Trump rallying cry.

Massapequa High School's nickname is the Chiefs, but New York law states that schools must remove logos that are related to indigenous people by the end of the year.
