The erosion has sent sand flying across the top of Mount Baldy, depositing it on the south face of the dune. So far, the sand has encroached on the parking lot and a picnic shelter.

Sand from the dune moved about 10 feet this past year, covering part of a road leading from the parking lot for those visiting Mount Baldy and its nearby beach on the park's eastern edge.

On a sunny July day in 2013, 6-year-old Nathan disappeared during a hike on Mt. Baldy, a dune inside Indiana Dunes National Park. He had dropped through the dune and was trapped.
