Rose of Sharon is an upright shrub, perhaps 8 to 10 feet tall. It’s not a delicate shrub, fine with twigs, but one with branches that are relatively thick and few.

And rose of Sharon is cold hardy too, withstanding temperatures as low as 10 degrees without complaint. Expect it to grow into a shrubby tree that is 12 feet tall by six feet wide.

But they really prefer sun. The rose of Sharon can get large, upwards to 12 feet tall and easily six feet wide, but they can be contained by annual pruning each year if you want to keep them smallish.

In general, rose-of-Sharon shrubs grow eight to 10 feet tall and spread four to 10 feet. The growth rate ranges from slow to moderate, and transplanting is easy.

Due to the National Gardening Bureau declaring 2021 the Year of the Hardy Hibiscus, I find myself back, once again, visiting these reliable and late-blooming perennial and shrubby plants.
