The Hot Air Balloon Glow has been a part of Kingsport since Fun Fest’s second year. Kingsport resident Lisa Berry has been coming to the event since she can remember.

The fatal hot-air balloon crash that killed four people including the pilot was due to pilot error, according to a final report from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The NTSB concluded that if the pilot had used a controlled release of air instead of quickly releasing it, the accident would not have occurred.

The crash, which happened in Eloy on Jan. 14, 2024, resulted in the death of four people, including the person who was piloting the hot air balloon at the time.

Some 30 balloons are expected for the Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The event features hot air balloon displays, kids’ activities, food and craft vendors, live music, tethered balloon rides, and a hot air balloon night glow.

Hot air balloons offer breathtaking sights and a sense of adventure. However, pilots can't just land them anywhere, and terrain and local laws both matter.
