Prateik Babbar is the son of actors Raj Babbar and Smita Patil. When Prateik was born in 1986, his mother, Smita Patil, tragically died shortly after due to childbirth complications.

Prateik Babbar has dropped his father's surname, adopted his mother's name and will be known as Prateik Smita Patil. His wife, Priya Banerjee, also defended not calling the Babbars to their wedding.
